ARTIST From MATA ORTIZ villiage UNIQUE BULB SHAPE RARE
SIGNED OLLA WATER JUG JAR Bulb-shaped bottom POTTERY collectible!
Signed by Luli Quezada.
Luli Quezada (Lourdes "Luli" Quintana de Quezada) is listed in the book "The Many Faces of Mata Ortiz" as a potter working there in 1999.
This is a rare bulb shape from the highly regarded Mexican pottery village of Mata Ortiz in northern Chihuahua. Pottery making in the village dates back only to the 1980's, and in the last couple decades, it has become a world-famous center of Mexican ART pottery production.
Some of the early work was based on designs taken from native-American Indian pottery. Now most of the Mata Ortiz potters have developed their own designs and specialties.
This is not an " Acoma style " pot. It is distinctively Mata Ortiz. Reddish-Brown and Black highly detailed hand-painted design on white clay.
Measures 7 1/2 inches high by apx. 5 inches wide at the middle of it's fat bulb shape. The longer opening of the spout measures 2 1/2 inches across.
This feels very good in hand and is beautiful to look at!
VERY NICE COLLECTIBLE condition. NO cracks, chips, or damage that I can see. But is sold as-is - used.
(The paint is slightly smudged in a couple spots - see photo's. Typical for the balance act of painting on a round-bottomed pot that doesn't stand up on it's own like other pots.)
This jar weighs one pound. Shipping is estimated at 3 lbs with packing material and box weight.
Check out my other listing this week for a RARE vintage tourist trade Maricopa Indian PEE POSH pottery pot Black on red-clay! I will combine shipping.
